That Night on Soundcloud That Night on YouTube This song is about that one special night that can propel a relationship into a exciting and long future. That night for BeBe and me was July 3, 1977. Well, that was the first. So this will be the last song of an album being released on July 3rd. I thought the song was done, and then along came Dan Simmons (firesong). Well, actually I called him in to see how he could improve it. He suggested adding a piano and some strings. There were already a lot of tracks in the mix, but I was very happy to erase everything and just use his demo. Wow, what a difference. Thanks, Dan. You brought this song to a whole new level of good (I enjoyed the mixing challenges too ).=, and thank you for sharing your talents. We made this all back in January, so thanks for your patience too. That NightThere was that one night we talked till dawn, then watched the rising Sun. I knew before two I needed you, and you were the only one. In the morning light you told me you feel the same way too. So that's the night we fell in love. When we got married we promised love and never to forget that night. We knew that we would live our life as one and all would always be alright. Now when looking back we know that our love has pulled us through. Nothing can erase that night, That night in Paris, that night in Spain, that cozy night we spent in Rome... Now every night we live with what we found that night we started out alone. Every day we wake and wonder what would our lives have been if we had not have had that night. Hi Marty,
What a lovely song! And the video is so well produced to reflect the lyric and feel.
Loved the sax! And what a great write!
Bringing Dan in could never hurt - he's pretty danged talented! This sure sounds great! The strings are marvelous, and your vocal is perfect for the song. Very nicely done!

Hey Marty,
This sounds really cool. Has a very retro almost 50s feel. I thought of that movie Back to the Future, and one of those retro songs that they played at the school dance.
Kind of reminded me of that!
Anyway this is really cool. I think you guys did a great job with it.

Nice Job on a cool love song.
Interestingly, today is the 41st anniversary for my wife and me. It started one night..... with a borrowed cowboy hat and a setup by our mutual friends.
I enjoyed the song.

Marty McFly...this does have that great retro feel as David mentioned...that's probably why when you first sent this to me I loved it right off the bat...man you are a great songwriter and producer, bassist, etc. and it is a joy to work with you as many on this forum can attest...after I worked on it the melody got stuck in my head for weeks...now it's going to get stuck there again (not a bad thing at all)...great song, great mix...thanks again for letting me on board on a great trip! And happy upcoming anniversary!

Gee, Marty, this is a SUPER song about something that matters, and it shows. AND a nice collaboration, too. Those I-VI-II-V progressions will always imply the 50's, but ya'll have done a great job breaking out of the cliches and providing a fresh take. Great playing and vocals, nice BiaB choices, and super arrangement. Super mix, too. That's going to be some kind of sweet album...

Alan Thank you, Alan. Yeah, I was happy with how the saxes came out ---especially useful was the Ctl+F8 feature for regeneration of single phrases. Marty,

Bob Thanks, Bob. It's all about the inspiration. Best decision I ever made. Hey Marty,

Anyway this is really cool. I think you guys did a great job with it. Yay! Marty McFly rides again. My favorite music of the 50s was when I visited my uncle's nursing home where I'd sit in the boiler room with the janitor and his guitar. Nice Job on a cool love song.

I enjoyed the song. Thanks, Herb. Man, there has GOT to be a good story there --worthy of your writing skills. A cowboy hat and a friendly setup?

Marty,
First of all, I love that you even know the first night you and your future wife met! Coming up soon so happy meeting anniversary and album release!
Of course, the sentiment in this one is awesome and the style with that sax break gives the warmth needed for such an emotional song. Well done, sir!

Absolutely gorgeous song and production, Marty! I'm envious of the quality it's so very good!
But I'm baffled by the © date as it can't have been written in 1951 (my birth year)!

And happy upcoming anniversary! Thank YOU, Dan. The best thing I did for this song was to hire you as First Mate. It turned out as one of those common situations where the First Mate knows how to run the ship better than the Captain, like nurses knowing practical medicine better than doctors. Gee, Marty, this is a SUPER song about something that matters, and it shows. AND a nice collaboration, too. I'll be working on one of those I-VI-IV-V DooWop tunes soon. This is one of the few songs that are mostly autobiographical --with poetic license. We were never in Rome together, although my wife was there with one of our daughters once. Marty,

Dewey Thank you, Dewey. Yeah, I've always been strangely savant about dates. So of course the rest of my brain is just full of useless numbers, which is why I can't find my keys.

What a lovely song, Marty. Janice said she imagines there’s a big heart on every year’s calendar for that date. 😊
These two lines really stood out for us:
“I knew before two I needed you, and you were the only one.” and also “We knew that we would live our life as one”
The sax solo fits very well and the additions from Dan give that extra lush quality. Your vocal shines here, full of emotion.
Those sunset scenes in the vid are beautiful too.
Love it!

I'm jealous: you write about love without being mawkish. That's something I cannot do. The percussion is an interesting fresh twist to this mix. That voice & that bass fit everything you do oh so well that it's like a sonic glue for the rest. Lovely stuff Marty, lovely.

But I'm baffled by the © date as it can't have been written in 1951 (my birth year)! Thanks, Chay. Also my birth year --also Fender's first electric bass guitar, and Jaco, Rocco and Stanley were born in 1951. The 1951-current is my way of saying Copyrght is for money, Creativity is lifelong. Beautiful Song ... heartfelt lyrics, nice melody, like the sax leads, all good here. Thanks, Elliott. I used two sax players so I added a beginning and end for them to fill. Marty, what a great love song that everyone can relate with Great vocal You found the perfect sax part for sure Tomorrow, 7/1, is our 57th wedding anniversary so the timing of this song is extra special to me Loved it YEOW, MARIO!! 57 is usually on ketchup bottles not weddings. Dang, you guys must have been married the old fashioned way --at age 13. Thank you! What a lovely song, Marty. Janice said she imagines there’s a big heart on every year’s calendar for that date. 😊

J&B Thanks, you two who are one. Those lines were written with you in mind. Tell Janice I remember dates as numbers, and whenever I see those numbers I'm reminded. Like whenever I see 1021, I think of her. Whenever I see 703, I think of this day. It's just something weird my brain did since I was a kid.

Wonderful! You guys play together like you've been in a band for years. I might have made the piano a little louder (Dan will agree), but all in all it's a solid mix. I LOVE the sax parts and your arrangement in general. Well done by both of you!

Very nice song and liked the video as well. Maybe you could try not to sing so exactly in-takt. Meaning, loosen up, sing a little smoother. If you can turn off the drums to record your voice, try that.
I began in 1970 with a 7 piece dance band. I had other bands, but my most successful one was "The four Windows", a 4 piece guitar band. Many concerts, TV shows, Record contract with EMI and a guitar hit in 1982 in Europe with my "Lonely Seagull".

Brad Thank you, Brad! A great song all around. The sax really does it for me! Well done. Thanks, Steve. I used two different alto soloists, but to me they seem pretty seamless, something that couldn't be done without partial regeneration. Love this software. Marty Lovely sentiment, and a pretty song, well produced and performed. Excellent work.
Peter Thank you, Peter! I'm jealous: you write about love without being mawkish. That's something I cannot do. The percussion is an interesting fresh twist to this mix. That voice & that bass fit everything you do oh so well that it's like a sonic glue for the rest. Lovely stuff Marty, lovely. Haha. Thanks, Ray. Sometimes I know I'm a bit to mawkish with my feelings. The percussion and that one agressive guitar that comes in for parts of the verses are additions where some have expressed displeasure. To me they add other dimensions to the song, and lord knows our relationship has had plenty of those. [I should have some positive Reactionary news by the end of next week. Please don't give up on this enthusiastic granddad.]

This is the highlight of your new album just like the other 10 songs The song is full of beautiful romantic lines like "Now every night we live with what we found/that night we started out alone". Classic love song in a classic ballad sound from the soundtrack of your life, has nice European vibe. Love the sax, always perfect for a perfect love song The strings fit excellently, wish they were mixed more upfront because they sound so great, but I understand that the organ and the piano are already competing with them, anyway they all create a lush and warm description of That Night. And your vocals are truly heartwarming. Janne

I LOVE the sax parts and your arrangement in general. Well done by both of you! Thanks, Brain. Yeah, I'll admit we've both been in bands for years but I know what you mean and appreicate it. Dan is seamless in whatever he does. A true pro. It was tough getting all of those pieces together. I brought the piano up here and there, especially in the last verse. I should really put out a version with just Dan's strings and piano --they are so good. Very nice song and liked the video as well. Maybe you could try not to sing so exactly in-takt. Meaning, loosen up, sing a little smoother. If you can turn off the drums to record your voice, try that. Thanks, Wolfgang. I'm so pleased that you give me advice on how to make the vocal track better, and i'll try it. Unfortunately, I don't think of myself as a singer --just a bassist who writes songs. hehe My best singing is strumming a guitar and wailing it out, but no one wants to hear that either. I know my songs could be so much better with real singers, but... I'd try synths like many here, but it would likely take me too long to figure them out. There's a map showing the 3 people who listened, and there's a big star right over your house. Yes, you're right, those strings add so much and they're so well crafted. Like I mentioned to Brain above, I should post a version of just Dan's contribution so you all can hear just how valueable it is.
