I coined the term 'satiricom' in 2021 as a contraction of 'satirical comment', which I like as it's also the same pronunciation as 'Satyricom' as in both "The Book of Satyrlike Adventures" of the Romans and Fellini's 1969 movie. From 21-22 I created text and images for 6 satiricoms, which were posted on various social media sites, so this year I decided to create a video of them and composed this music for the video, though I now actually prefer to listen to the music without the distraction of the images. Unless you're viewing on a fair size PC monitor you probably won't be able to read the text in the images, so if so, don't watch the video, just listen!

Bass: Oleo Bop w/ Acoustic Bass ~ Neil Swainson
Drums: Oleo Bop w/ Acoustic Bass ~ Craig Scott
Strings 1: Crooner Solo n Strings Orchestra ~ Steve Kummer
Guitar: Crooner Solo n Strings Orchestra ~ Oliver Gannon
Piano 1: East Dock Piano (2 sample hybrid) ~ Jeff Lorber
Piano 2: Aisling Celtic Air Cello Ballad ~ Blair Masters
Sirius Warm Pad & Strings ~ uncredited
Strings 2: Jazz Orchestra String Quartet ~ Avery Bright
Horns: Big Band Shout 11-part Horns / Crooner Big Band 9-part hybrid ~ Jim Clark
Vocals (solo): Rum Runner Old Time Vocal Jazz ~ Britt Savage
Organ: Country Rocks Guitar Solo, Pop Ba -- Gene Rabbai
Background Vocals: Speakeasy Old Time Vocal Jazz ~ Britt Savage
Bell Pad: 80s Pop Ballad w/ Bell Pad ~ Miles Black
Guitar Solo: Bricks Indie Rock w/ Guitar Solo ~ Mike Durham

From my Timeline notes:
Horns are a hybrid of Big Band Shout 11 part Horns & Crooner Big Band 9 part Horns samples, but as the centre part is way louder than what precedes and follows it, I had to cut the hybrid sample into 4, then decrease and increase the db of each section as needed. I also did a 1 second adjustable fade 1:35-1:36 to kill a single way too deep note.

84 bars; 4/4, G; tempo 110; Time 3:12

Chay,

This is great. Your compositions are like mini movies. There is so much movement and drama.

Love the tracks selections and especially the use of the Britt Savage RTs. Very nicely done.

Excellent mix and a really nice piece of music all around.

Cool that you made a video as well. Hoping to do that with my next song. At first I was a bit sceptical because the song starts a bit slow, but I'm glad I listened through it. It really evolves and everything fits nicely together.

Interesting composition. You introduced each instrument into the mix smoothly. Levels sound good.

WHOA, that's a lot of tracks to mix in and out, but you did an excellent job. Fun feel and I much enjoy the way you build it. Man, this is quite a production. It sounds like it could've taken you years --or at least seem that way. Well done, Chay!

Great job on mixing all of those tracks, the finished project sounds like it was professionally mixed

Thanks for the great response, Bob. At just over 3 minutes it's my shortest 'mini movie' yet. laugh

Thanks for listening and commenting, Alexander. I prefer to create my own images for videos, but check out BabuMusic's/Marty's videos as he puts really good ones together using Creative Commons sites, which he credits in his videos,

Thanks, Marty. It's my shortest instrumental yet and so didn't take as long to put together as the longer ones, despite the amount of tracks used. I mostly start out with an idea about what I want to create - in this case it was to use with the images, when usually it's the opposite way around - so I wanted to mix and match different sounds. Discovering the bell was a breakthrough. I always begin with the chord structure, then try oodles of different Styles - recently it's become 50+ - and often hours are spent trying variations together, always deleting more samples than keeping, then mostly the arranging and mixing almost take care of themselves.

Thanks for listening and responding, Mario. It's sadly true that there's "a lot of truth in [my] slideshow", but I don't think I could create any more 'satiricoms' as there's so much insanity in the artificial man-made world that I'm ceasing to care about it. Instead I focus on Our Common Mother, the all-nature-al Beautiful Earth, and putting love and spirit first.

Hi Chay,

Well, that was a real pleasure! Nice mixing of numerous tracks - and just the right tracks. I enjoy satire when delivered tastefully - you found the sweet spot fort it.

Very nice, indeed!

Thanks again, J&B, but what's this about "that many tracks"? laugh There's 14 here, when "Reigning Guitars" has 15. I checked through my records and I have at least 2 with 13 and quite a few 10, 11 & 12. 5 is my lowest, 10 probably the average.

Chay,

As always, your videos are meaningful and interesting.
I'm always impressed.
The music, unlike the visuals, is moderately easy listening and relaxing.
The contrast is very fun.
Although many instruments are used, they are all neatly put together in one direction.
Enjoyed my listen and watch a lot.

Best regards.

Different, but in a pretty cool way, I like what you did.
Only question: You have (kinda) lyrics, why don't you sing or speak them?

I thought I'd answered the singing question on a different thread. I don't have lyrics for "Satiricom" and mostly likely won't write any as it works as a complete instrumental, but the reason I can't record vocals for currently 5 songs I have BiaB files for is because just over 2 years ago (in the Year of My SNAFU Catch 2022) karma moved me into a minuscule retirement flat and only after I'd moved in did I discover that all walls separating me from the neighbouring flat are made of plasterboard only, which means all sounds travel, to the point that I have to use headphones for all music and TV. On the few occasions I've played music over PC speakers I've instantly heard scufflings from next door as the almost perennial horde of relatives of my solo neighbour seem super-eager to find out what I'm playing. So, if I heard such when I was recording I'd automatically be put off, plus I don't want to be recording when said horde members start shouting at each other, which is pretty common.

Thanks for responding, Scott. What I find most tricky with big band horns is that the volumes levels of parts of the samples vary greatly from very low to very loud, so besides 'cutting and pasting' to create hybrid samples once has to also create adjustable fades and increases to level out.

I like this song.... You have some interesting layers in there.

I also like Adage # 74 It's exactly right. It takes a lot of effort to make doing something look effortless.
