Why are some backing track styles so faint? It's kind of annoying when you find a great style and then it's just doesn't create the nice ambiance and project cleanly. Increasing volume too is limited

It happens on quite a few Real tracks not just midis. I use mainly Jazz/Latin.

Any advice welcomed.

What audio interface (sound card) are you using?
I just increase the volume of my audio interface when faced with such a problem.

Unclear if the pianist is a total beginner or a professional jazz player?

Why are RealTracks recorded at different volume levels? You have different people making RealTracks. Each person creating RealTracks is in different studios.

You can use the Normalize or Volume Gain effect to bring up the volume level of any track in a song.

Those same effects can be applied to a RealTrack audio file. But remember that when you apply an effect to a RealTrack that you are editing a RealTrack so the change will be present forever.

And to add to Jim's fine answers, why are MIDI tracks recorded at different levels?

If you have a good MIDI sound generator, timbre of each voice changes with the 'note on' control level.

Example: At low volumes, a saxophone sounds mellow, but that same sax can sound shrill at high volumes. Many acoustic and electric instruments are like that. When you think of it, so is the human voice.

This is a factor I always use when making my MIDI styles. Or course, a good MIDI synth is needed, some cheaper synths and plugins will not react that way.

This might not be helpful, but anything I record, I ultimately 'normalize' to -3dm.
Than at least everything has some sort of perspective balance. This might not work for everyone. It generally works for me.
