Saw a piece on his art on npr this evening.
A cross between Jackson pollack and the lady artist (Maude) on Big Lebowski.
Some of it looks pretty cool.

I understand he's 80 and still jamming live shows in Vegas . . . good for him! I also understand both his parents were drummers, so that explains his "polyrhythm genes"

I love the jam.
That's the one thing I really do miss about playing live with other really good musicians. Just kick it off and see where the muse takes us.
I can certainly see the similarities to working with art/paints, and other forms of artistic expression.
I've done a little bit of art with wood and epoxy and you can be extremely creative with that stuff. Very satisfying to see the end result. Very similar to writing and creating music.

Me too. I have 2 datapoints with the Grateful Dead. Blasting out of a coed dormitory room 2 doors down from mine came this other-wordly heavily percussion-based music. After waiting in line to thoroughly read every bit of the album cover it turned out to be Terrapin Station. At that time I never paid any attention to what the music critics said, we all just thought it was a groundbreaking masterpiece. At my earlist conveience, I hit the record store for my own copy. Then about a year later they came on campus for a free outdoor concert. Needless to say, it was one heck of a jam that blew our college-kid's minds. That day may have been the only day all semester I took off from the books. The very next day it was back to thermodynamics and calculus.
