Is it possible to import from Finale into Band in a Box (version 2024)? That is, I notate music (e.g. a lead sheet) in Finale, export to a music XML file (.mxl) and want to then import that into BIAB.

Welcome to the forum.
I’m a user and you would probably want an official answer from PG Music, but here goes.
I do not use Finale (I have used it in the past) so I don’t know for sure.
BIAB does support import (and export) of Music XML files.
Music XML is a standard but in practice it isn’t always implemented correctly or fully by all music programs. I’m sure you already know that, which is why you are asking.
We know there are some problems with the implementation in BIAB.
Given all this, someone will have to test it to be sure.
PG Music offers a 30-day refund if you decide to try this and you don’t get the results you need.
Other users here may know better. In my tests of a few years ago of five notation programs, I found a variety of issues with Music XML files, but my primary interest was exporting from BIAB into notation programs. Although I am currently a beta tester for one notation company for several years, and for a former company for two decades, I do not know specifically about Finale. I’ll be following this thread and would like to know the answer.

Excellent information above.
We do know that PG Music are aware of certain shortcomings with their XML functionality, and that they have it listed in their item tracking. What we don't know is when that might be investigated / resolved.
Do you currently have BIAB 2024? If not, you may be able to share a music XML file to a file sharing service (Dropbox or similar) and somebody may be able to see what the corresponding result is in BIAB.

Yes, that's a good idea. Post a file on Dropbox with public access. Also post a PDF of what the score looks like. We can test it. Maybe a one-page score, with some representative things to test?

I do have BIAB 2024. I tried importing a .mxl file and it didn't apparently do anything at all, i.e. I see nothing in the notation view, lead sheet view, etc. The file I imported was notated in Finale (single instrument, just melody, no chords) and exported as a .mxl file.
That said, I'm pretty new to BIAB and may just be looking in the wrong place...?

Right - I tried both, but nothing seemed to happen - I can't find evidence of anything having been imported. The dialog opens to select a file, I select it, and then I'm straight back to the BIAB interface. I look in the Notation view and Lead Sheet view and don't see anything. Should I be looking somewhere else? Have you successfully imported notated music in .mxl format?

Music XML seems to have several extensions, and not all may be recognized by individual programs. I sometimes have to rename the file to get the extension that will be supported. Ex. songname.xml or songname.mxl or.even songname.musicxml so try them all. What does Finale use as a default when you export to Music XML?

It exports songname.mxl. When I go to open the file, files with the .mxl file extension are enabled in the dialog - other non-XML files are greyed out, so at least BIAB recognizes the .mxl file extension.

Can you upload the .mxl file to Dropbox or similar and send the link? Somebody here might be able to analyse it.

OK, first I loaded this into my notation program. I want to know what the file should have before we spend any time discussing what gets imported into BIAB. In other words, if Finale isn't sending something, we waste time looking for it in the imported result.
I see:
Little Sunflower title (nice tune; where's the bridge?) Easton Stuard, Jeroen van Tyn Freddie Hubbard really good articulations, although I was surprised to see a few stacatissimo markings (ex. measure 33, beat 1) double bar lines in what appears to be the right places
I do not see: chords rehearsal letters anything but melody
Is that correct?
Then I looked at the source code, and it isn't ASCII. I don't know if BIAB can read compressed Music XML files. Certainly, I cannot, so I can't see if there is chord info for example. Try setting the preferences in the export menu to Uncompressed, so you get a file with the extension XML.

Oops - thought I had replied a few days ago...
I took your advice re: exporting as an uncompressed music XML file, and it did indeed import - thank you so much!
Novice with BIAB here, thank you for your patience & expertise.
