AUKUS
I have little calibration of the money involved (except that it will be big) for these subs. But imho, I'd like to see Austrailia and other allies grow this and other design/manufacturing capability. Doing so could result in better, smarter designs for all of us.
I wonder what opinion the Chief of the Defence Force (Admiral Johnston?) has. Anyone who reaches such levels is mighty smart.
Regarding Austrailian politics, I'm WAY out of my league. In my own country we have our own problems and are on the brink of flipping from a democracy to an autocracy.
As for the waste sites, I'm not sure if that will involve only the waste from the subs you'll operate or the waste from the larger international fleet. In any case, to the physicists and engineers of the allied nations I say:
"Come on guys, sharpen your pencils and develop compact fusion energy sources . . . you can do it!"

Wow, the disinformation/lack of information you're getting in the USA is amazing. This is from our national, govt owned broadcaster, so as balanced but pro govt. as possible:"
"Five of the eight SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered subs will be delivered by the middle of the 2050s, with the final three delivered in the 2060s.
The goal is to have one submarine built every two years from the early 2040s through to the late 2050s, to meet demand.
As for the Virginia-class submarines from the US to fill the gap in the meantime, the idea is to have them in the 2030s."
As you can read we MAY get some 2nd hand subs as gap fillers in the NEXT DECADE then the others will come in two year increments into the 2060s.The new builds won't START for twenty years.
It's a stupid deal on all levels: the time frame is way out of whack with reality and the Prime Minster who orchestrated the deal is now working for a military "THINK TANK" in the USA, (he's famous for having been sacked from every job he's had since university - even when he went to work in NZ for a time he was sacked & sent back to Oz). He did it, in part, to secure a job because he knew he was being dumped.] by the electorate. Even the most hawkish folk would see this as a pointless exercise given the time frame.
Here's a link to the complete article...good general overview: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-03-14/what-is-aukus-submarine-deal-details-announced/102091510

Brave folks indeed.

Creative idea, creative performance, creative arrangement and an excellent mix.
Thanks for such a kind review, it's really appreciated guys.
I haven't toured any sub, but I'm thinking to get that on my bucket list smile

Here's something else to consider. I'm guessing the life-support systems of that time were barebones and not designed for what we would call comfort.
Most probably the atmosphere was cold, humid and stale, at least while submerged.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Nice instrumental! Creative and fun to listen to.

I saw your response to Ray. Elvis Costello has some pretty amazing songs, and although the feel is different, "Shipbuilding" seems Costello's obvious nautical-related song. No submarine effects on it, but it's go Chet Baker on trumpet, so well worth the listen.

For submarine-themed songs with submarine inspired sounds, there's always Thomas Dolby's "One Of Our Submarines" and Al Stewart's "Life In Dark Water". So you're in good company here! smile
Hey David, I appreciate the review.
Thanks also for the song suggestions. I'm aware of "Life in Dark Water", a great song, Al Stewart is one of my favorite artists. But the others are new to me, I'll check them out. Subs are such a neat technology; basically a spaceship on planet earth and the guys that man them are a special breed.

Ray, like I say, I can’t address Australian internal politics or how your procurement policies are managed.

The article you found dated 3/12/2023 by Georgia Hitch talks about the new SSN AUKUS subs being delivered in the 2050s and 2060s. And how the UK and US has agreed to share design plans so that you can contribute to the build. This should save your military-industrial complex decades of redundant research and design efforts plus ensure compatibility with your international partners. I understand that these will be nuclear powered but the Australian versions will contain no nuclear weapons. In the meantime, a deal has been struck for you to acquire 3 US Navy Virgina-class, nuclear powered fast attack subs. These should “tide you over”. Some may be 2nd hand, are thought to arrive in the 2030s and are quite capable boats containing tomahawk cruise missiles. Some may also include a 9-man lockout diving chamber and a 300 KW high-energy laser weapon located in the photonics mast.

The article I found dated 12/17/2023 by Andrew Greene and from the same news outlet talks about Australia acquiring Royal Navy Astute-class and US Navy Virginia-class submarines at HMAS Stirling from 2027.

I have no evidence any of this is disinformation.

With any large procurement program you should expect schedule delays, cost over-runs and twists and turns as various clauses and subclauses are triggered. And I’m still curious on Admiral Johnston’s views. Or maybe Rear Admiral Wendy Malcolm has stated a position. [As a side note, the French are unhappy to be left out of this deal and predictably, the Chinese are more than unhappy.]

But the larger point is we should all welcome such tight military cooperation and the tri-lateral security pact between the nations involved. Of course, we won’t know how effective these cooperations really are until either the missiles start flying or (as in the case of the Soviets), China collapses from within. Nevertheless, kudos to those in your command structure that are striving to deploy a more muscular defense posture.
