Do you ever think back to when you were a kid and reflect on how growing up back then was so different than what kids today experience growing up? That's what our latest song is about. For those that don't like video there is an audio link at the end of the post.

The Band:

2526:Piano, Electric, Rhythm FunkTremolo Ev16 100
4231:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm SoulRock70s Ev 100
1525:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm PopPowerPushDirty Ev 120
RealDrums: SoulRock70sEv^5-a:Hat & Sidestick , b:Hat & Snare

I used EZDrummer3 to add a kick drum, I thought the BIAB one was not strong enough.

I'm playing the lead guitar and the acoustic, also did the lead vocal.
Marty (BabuMusic) is on Bass guitar
Christiane (Chris) Spruit on BGV's

Mixed in Reaper with plugins from Cockos, Waves, and iZotope, mastered with Ozone 11.

Simpler Times

Raised In a small town, where the sun would shine,
Running through the fields, losing track of time.
Barefoot boys with dreams so high,
Playing underneath that endless sky.

Bikes on dirt roads, laughter in the air,
Climbing tall trees we didn't have a care.
Tunes on the radio and a summer breeze,
Living our life, and making memories.

But those were simpler times, when the world was wide,
We’d play till dark, with no need to hide.
Parents’ voices calling us home,
In those simpler times, we were never alone.

Now I sit and reminisce, about those times we had
remembering the good, forget about the bad
A world so pure, a heart so free,
In those simpler times, just you and me.

Dave,

Love this song and your vocal. One of the best vocals I have ever heard from you.

Chris sounds great on backup and Marty has one of the best bass tones around.

Excellent mix and an overall fabulous production.

I thought at first you'd resurrected JJ Cale for the vocal.
Great sound, balance and theme.

Wow, you guys sound GREAT! Super tune, arrangement and mix. Vocals are super, and I like placement of the high harmonies in the mix. Killer guitars and bass, too, of course. Especially love the lead guitar riff. Love it all!

The mix was perfect.

Hi Dave,

This is a top song - excellent melody, vocals, guitar and production.

Boy have you got the Tony Joe White, Chris Rea things down pat or what - and that is a very very good thing.

Very enjoyable.

Best Regards

Hi, Dave.

The mix sounds great! Vocals, harmony, guitars and that super-punchy drum.

Such a nice sound that I almost forgot to pay attention to the lyrics! wink

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I've probably told you a million times already, but you have such a beautiful Chris Rea tone in your voice.
I love it.
As always, Chris on background vocals and Marty on bass are the perfect choices for this song (well, probably ANY song smile ).
Enjoyed the listen.
A lot!

First of all, I am really into the song, Such a rich, full sound. All the parts work well, vocal, BGV, bass, lead, etc. in a clean and well mixed production. Your lyrics are spot on and I can identify with your message. As far as the bikes go, I remember banana seats and sissy bars. laugh

Hi Everyone,\

Man, this is just so good! Dave, your vocal is standout! Chris and Marty never fail to make anything they are involved with that much better.

And your lead track is fantastic! Every second listening to this was a pure pleasure. Terrific work, everyone.

Nice video, too!

I literally live next door to our town's high school. (Crawl over my back fence and you're on their football practice field.) They ask me all the time what I think is different about growing up now vs. my youth in the 1950s. I tell them loss of respect, loss of innocence, and community participation - to include playing outdoors with neighborhood kids.

I think you captured the subject so nicely.

Best to you,

Alan

Hi, David.

The kick drum for that particular RealDrum track was really weak so I'm doubling it with a kick drum from EZDrummer3.

Thanks for the listen and comments!

Dave...what a great song! this is certainly NOT the blues...at least lyrically and you nailed it...first off your vocals (along with Chris) were really great...your duet parts are the best I've heard from you guys...man those were tight!...your guitar work is the best around and the total mix with Marty is so pro and so good...simpler times for sure and great memories of them...this was really excellent!

I was a little distracted by the 1st lines of the intro/lick suggesting Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.
No probem though as it went enlsewhere and was its own thing.
Very J.J.Cale vocally and that a fab thing.
Christine supports your voice really well and Marty, Mr Bassman, underpins the song with a solid foundation that accents the right points in the rhythm & melody.
As usual your guitar stings n sings.

Cheers

I can relate to that message, also as an adult feeling that these times are less simpler. Pleasantly nostalgic blues with light arrangement reflecting the simplicity, the drums sound great. Enjoyable calm vocals with an excellent range from low to high, stylish backing vocals. Dave's trademark guitar fills and Marty's solid bass keep it nicely together.

Thanks, Dan! As far as the vocals being tight goes, that's on Chris; she is the pro wink Happy you liked this!

Similar rhythm to that Don't let me be misunderstood lick I suppose, good ear, I never noticed that. That was my favorite song by them BTW.

Thanks for the listen/comments, Ray, I appreciate it!

YEAH!!! Everything about this song is perfect, Dave. Excellent vocal. You are so much more relaxed at the mic. These well-thought-out lyrics makes the whole presentation jump to the favorites pile. Then... Chris comes through with the best tasting icing for this yummy musical cake. Thanks to all who mentioned the bass. Very kind, but this song is so good that any bass line would've been good. Still, always glad you invite me, Dave.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Janice said, “the first verse got me immediately and I thought this sounds like Bud.”
Bud said “yep sometimes as a kid I’d take a bag lunch and be gone all day rambling through woods and creeks and fields.”

So …. yeah we love the lyric. smile

The lyric, music and video all contributed to the reminiscing vibe.
Your and Chris’s vocals both sound great.

Marty’s bass and your guitars are par excellence. Nothing new there!
We much liked the electric piano - it brought out the light, happy carefree feeling very well.

Loved it ... audio and video!

Dave,

This is awesome music. The presentation and the production are superb. Everything sounds so thoroughly polished. You really are a master tweaker of dials and slider of sliders. Your vocals are outstanding and Chris is a perfect fit with her background vocals.

I really enjoyed this!
