The sounds of the RT pianos is, in fact, sometimes the issue. Especially the earlier RTs. There is sometimes a "wash" of reverb-i-nessthat does not work in some mixes. The solution to that is to use the MIDI Supertrack instead (most pianos have them). You get the same performance, but can use whatever piano vst works for you. Easier to fit-in-the-mix.

This is true.... not only for the pianos but especially on the guitars and other instruments as well. I think PG would be well served to go back and have a good look at all of the real tracks from the early days and perhaps either remove them or better yet, record them again knowing what they now know and using better techniques in the studio. Of course.... if they all translate well into the super midi tracks... using that method might be a good "fix".

This is the truth. Stopped using the squishy sounding RT pianos many years ago. I'll audition a RT piano in BiaB then export the MIDI transcript to a DAW and use a piano VI, usually Waves Grand Rhapsody. But I may post a piano-heavy song using Blandenburg piano just for fun...

…discovered that I needed to have sample tank 4 and the default sound samples with it. Once I got all of it, everything worked perfectly. Yes. Unlike the Kontakt/Kontakt Player model, SampleTank is always free. The paid versions include more libraries, that’s all. Here’s a link to all of the free IK CS (Custom Shop) players. IK CS Downloads

Brandenburg pianos demo Here's a quick demo of the Brandenburg piano sounds in a BiaB song arrangement with vocalist. For the first 30 seconds or so the piano can be heard clearly on its own. For the rest of the song it's in the mix except for the section with BGVs near the end. I did use the Brandenburg samples labeled "bright" since I liked the way it sits in the mix better. No other tweaks or FX added. I like this VI enough, but maybe not enough to replace my go to. Old dogs, new tricks...

Ron - Thanks for doing this! A perfect demo. I think. I tells me what I need to know (I appreciate your Producer Hat)
From this, I would label that piano sound "lo-fi". It is rather one-dimensional. That can be a very good thing in a mix - as you have demonstrated. This sounds great in the mix - because of its one-dimensional-ness. (I make up good words)
The right reverb might open more possibilities. But lo-fi-works-in-the-mix is a good thing.

I like this VI enough, but maybe not enough to replace my go to. Old dogs, new tricks... Nice demo. There’s a lot to be said for a piano that sits nicely in the mix. For years, I used the mono piano that was included with the old UVI Player — no longer available in the current version. My wife’s go-to is the Alan Parsons Imperial Grand, a very nice VI sampled from a Bösendorfer 290 (9’5") owned by Mark Knopfler. It’s included in all of the IK Max bundles or separately. I’m hoping that IK’s Pianoverse Max 200 module (not yet released) will sound half as nice as the hundred year old Bōsendorfer 200 (6’7") that sits in our home with a newly rebuilt action. Of course we record it live but for client tracks, give me a piano roll to edit any day.

I had to use the OLD IK Authorization Manager, instead of the current Product Manager.
Once I entered the serial in it, the piano showed up in ST4. THIS helps! Thanks Floyd
