I wrote in my blurb for the 'rock' version of this song sung by Argentinean Denisse Ferrara that I'd next go for a native English speaker and I thought I had when approaching Lucy Rod (not her full surname) as her vocals sounded 100% English, but it turned out that she's also an Argentinean! But I liked her vocals so much I decided to stick with her despite the pronunciations problems when working with non-native English speakers.

As with the 'rock' version the full lyrics are on the YouTube post, so PLEASE CLICK ON 'WATCH ON YOUTUBE' for those. Other than the title and end title images this video is identical to that of the rock version so as not to detract from the music and lyrics.

Cast in order of appearance:
Drums: Country Rock Guitar Solo Pop Ba ~ Brian Fullen
Bass Guitar: Bricks Indie Rock w Guitar Solo ~ Tobin Frank
Piano: East Dock Latin Fusion Gtr Solo ~ Jeff Lorber
Vocals: real human being ~ Lucy Rod
1st Organ: Scroll Funky Blues Organ ~ Charles Treadway
Guitar: Slow Jazz Rock w Soloist ~ Andy Reiss
2nd Organ: Country Rock Guitar Solo Pop Ba ~ Gene Rabbai
BiaB Backing Vocals: Speakeasy Old Time Vocal Jazz ~ Britt Savage
Tenor Sax Solo: Verdite Light Soul Pop Sax Solo ~ Mark Douthit
Silence (synth): Jovian Divine Alt Rock Multi ~ uncredited
Organ Solo: Scroll Funky Blues Organ ~ Charles Treadway (6 part hybrid)

Chay,

That's a very cool version. Great blend of instrumentation and a sophisticated mix. Your singer is excellent and I love how you incorporate Britt Savage into the song.

Excellent!

No problem understanding her beautiful voice. I really like this version, Chay. I like how you build these, and hats off for the job you do with the videos. I like your instrument choices and the way you lay everything in the mix so pleasently. Man, that sax solo is so good. Nothing flashy but so appropriate for the song. Then the organ solos with the same flavor and accomplished talent. Harmonies are so good, and Lucy was an excellent choice and I'm glad you stayed with her.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Chay, GREAT version, and I REALLY love Lucy's vocals. You've arranged a very pleasant dynamic build, and done your usual sparkly job with the mix and master. Just when I think you've taken this theme as far as you can...there you go AGAIN...

Looking forward to the next version. smile

I have to agree with everything Babu wrote about this piece. Great choice of instruments and arrangement, excellent vocals and harmonies. Well mixed.

Thanks for the response, Bob. Whether or not I kept the Britt Savage vocals in was dependent on what I received from Lucy re harmonies. There was only one stem file with similar harmony vocals, which one hardly notices in the mix, so I added that section as the prelude, gave it a bit of reverb and double-tracked it for depth. It was just too beautiful a harmony not to use solo.

Thanks, Marty! I was actually on the verge of deleting this version as the yet to be finished 'baroque' version works so well, plus the instrumental break in that with cello, violin and viola actually work better in the 'smooth' version than do the sax and organ, but I wanted each version to have different instrumentation and vocalists so I kept them in. I had to add a bit of reverb to the sax and a lot to the organ to beef them up - plus the organ solo was difficult to construct and it's made up of 6 different regenerations - but once I had the vocals files from Lucy I knew I had to keep this version. It turned out a lot better than I expected it to.

Thanks for the positive critique, Ron. I now rank myself as a Mix-Master Corporal, but as regards mastering I'm still a 2nd class cadet! laugh Deya Willing I'll have the 'baroque' version done in 2 or 3 weeks, maybe 4, with a 3rd vocalist.

Ghostgum

Thanks for the positive feedback, Ghostgum, I originally only had 2 versions of the song planned, but after my success with the "Moonlight On The Bay" instrumental it inspired me to use a similar rhythm section.

Chay,

English is not my native language, so I'm not sure if Lucy's English pronunciation is good or not.
However, I can clearly see that she is a great vocalist.
And it's a very pop song.
For a vocal song, I think the instrumental solo interlude is a bit long.
But overall I think it's a great piece.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Lucy's vocals are nice.
I like the sax. Organ, too.
And a nice sound bed to carry it all.
Good mix.

Expertly mixed. Love the gentle sound of the band. Synth vocal sounds pretty darn genuine to me. The flows nicely. I dig that organ solo. Nice addition.

Thanks for the response, EZ Storm, but there are no synth vocals in the song. You must have misunderstood something. Argentinean Lucy Rod on main vocals and harmonies, plus BiaB's Britt Savage on 'oo-aah' backing vocals. The intro harmony is all Lucy, genuine and authorised human.

Hi Chay,

This is a lovely arrangement and so well mixed. I might be out in the barn with this, but your singer reminded me a bit of Cindy Lauper at the beginning of her career. Nicely done in all respects.

Best to you,

Alan

Hi, Chay.

Your vocalist and arrangement sounds excellent. Smooth and easy listening, just like it was advertised.

But I'd have cut the instrumentals in half because long songs make me sleepy. wink

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?
