You can google this band who was recording in North Carolina when hurricane Helene hit. I hope all out friends here on the forum and elsewhere are OK.
I have been very lucky so far this year with my business and property spread out from the Keys to central Florida. The hurricanes are getting larger and stronger by the year. Hurricains are no longer just something that affectes coastal areas.
Of all the problems that could happen at a gig, it seems a bit strange to need to be so concerned about the weather. As a pilot, the history of musicans and and aircraft is not lost on me. Hurricanes, flooding....wow
Cheers,
Billy

I can't even imagine, but my mother grew up in a house on the ocean in Florida. As a child, she thought hurricanes were fun. As a senior citizen returning to live there, she would be in her car headed inland before the newscaster could finish saying the word 'hurricane'.

Hi Matt
The French Broad River winds through the mountains of western North Carolina, fed by dozens of mountain streams, and crosses the city of Asheville. At over 2,000 feet above sea level and more than 250 miles from the coast, it is an unlikely place to prepare for a hurricane.
As these storms get more powerful, heading inland takes on a new meaning. Trying to escape from south Florida is a real problem. Trafic, lack of fuel, hotels to stay in become real issues. People I know have left the Miami area and had to drive to New Orleans before they could find a hotel in past storms.
Helene is turning out to be a very bad storm with over two hunderd people killed and counting. Most of the people were far inland.
I have never seen the water temps as high as they have been in the last couple of years. I recorded water temps fishing 150 miles out in the Gulf off Key West Florida at 94F last month. Heat is the fuel for hurrcanes.
A good many people here on the forum live in places subject to these storms. Best wishes for everyone.
Billy

Wishing the best for everyone affected by Ms Helene. It seems to me that it's just a matter of time before the U.S. says sorry to the rest of the world for unilaterally pursuing planetary-level geoengineering beginning with SAI. What is going on with global warming is simply not sustainable. Will we get it right the first time, probably not. But look at the cost of inaction. SAI

Yes, best wishes for all affected.
Billy, I visited my brother when he lived briefly in Ashville. He was a musician, too, and found his way to the active arts community. The French Broad is normally pretty sleepy there, and the surrounding mountains might make one think it was protected from severe weather.

SAII agree with you Steve but we can't do it alone. We have to get China, Mexico, India, and all of the other nations to get on board. I don't know how we can accomplish that but it must be done. A couple of years ago I read that in the last 25-30 years the USA carbon footprint went down 25% but the world's carbon footprint went up 50%. I wish I could find that paper again. Probably controlling the car's emissions and the scrubbers on coal smoke stakes really helped.
Unclear if the pianist is a total beginner or a professional jazz player?

Checking in here. Living on the east coast of FL, I got lucky. A couple of days of gale force winds, plenty of hurricane force gusts, and a lot of rain. We lost a lot of small branches and plenty of palm fronds, nature's pruners at work. We did lose one big branch from an oak tree, but it didn't land on anthing that won't grow back. Our biggest loss was that our Thursday night gig got cancelled. Like I said, we got lucky. I can't even imagine, but my mother grew up in a house on the ocean in Florida. <...snip...> I've been in every hurricane since Donna in 1960. As much as I would love to live on the beach, or the barrier islands, I know better. It's just gambling on disaster. I saw 1/4 mile of barrier island disappear during a storm. Gone with everythig on it. They tried to rebuild it by pumping new sand, but the currents took the sand out almost as soon as they put it down. I've seen Fort Meyers beach (average elevation 3 feet) get washed over and destroyed 4 times now. And yet the rebuild. It doesn't make sense to me. Cedar key, has been washed over many times, too. It seems the storms are getting bigger and stronger as we warm the planet. The gulf is 10 or so degrees warmer than it was when I was a child. Warm water fuels bigger and more intense hurricanes. What happened in Carolina and adjacent states, was predicted, but we do nothing to stop or slow the warming. My heart goes out to all who weren't lucky this time around. Some lost everything. I gave a donaton to the red cross, and I'll be donating blood next week, as it is a light gig week for us.

We had a yard full of debris - 2 day clean up, but no damage. We know a lot of folks with homes on the coast or on the barrier islands. They all flooded. You have to pretty much gut your house after that. All your contents are destroyed. Now just trash. Mold begins Immediately. Rampant. Drywall needs to be ripped out immediately. Cabinets. Appliances. All toast.
It was almost impossible to get homeowners insurance in Florida before this. And there has never been one like this.

I understand the first ones in the nation took place in Louisiana, back in 2017.
