Simple.
And complicated.

The BAND:

Addictive Drums
RealDrums in song: MetalSlowBigTomGroove

RealTracks in song: 4056:Guitar, Electric, Soloist ModernCountryStraightGrittyBrent Ev 120

I played bass, organ and all guitars except solos

organ - Sampletank PolyM 4 Drawbar Light (Alesis Q49)
bass - Peavey Foundation through a Guitar Rig 7 preset.
guitar - G&L ASAT Classic through Guitar Rig 7 presets .

The Words (all home grown)

COMPLICATED

her t-shirt says "don't legislate my body"
her bumper sticker warns "don't tread on me"
the radio plays nothing but redneck
she flies a rainbow flag for all the world to see
she's complicated

a perfect angel in a sweatshirt and jeans
a devil's delight in her little black dress
curled on a sofa, a book by the fire
a girls night out too wild to confess
she's complicated

try to win her to your cause
be careful what you say
pickin' sides is black and white
she's every shade of grey
kind and cruel
order and rule
mixed with some chaos and drama
you won't figure her out
you won't pin her down
the kind of girl you don't take home to mama
she's complicated

RBG bobblehead dancing on her dashboard
winchester cradled in her truck gun rack
she bleeds red white and blue, the truth and three chords
but believes you can have a foot on more than one track
she's complicated

try to win her to your cause
be careful what you say.....

Ya just never know, do ya...

Say something intelligent.

fj

(an interesting footnote -
The bass that I played on this I bought used in St. Louis in 1992 from a guy who CLAIMED that he had used it on the recording of "Yummy, Yummy Yummy" by Ohio Express - and did not get credit.
Who knows
edit - best I can determine this bass was made circa 1984. Since Yummy was recorded in '68, this obviously wasn't used. It's likely I mixed up his story so that it might have been this bass...)

Floyd,

WOW! AWESOME!

The groove on this is so infectious and your vocal is hard hitting and full of RocknRoll!

Stellar punchy mix. Great drums! The band on this one is firing on all cylinders...

" try to win her to your cause
be careful what you say
pickin' sides is black and white
she's every shade of grey"

Of course, the lyrics are excellent and clever. No one does it like you!

I have absolutely nothing intelligent to say, but I will say this: this is SUPERB, in every single way.

Floyd, wow, SUPER song! Great lyrics and AWESOME vocals. Love the arrangement and production, too. My better half is a complicated lass. Never a dull moment. smile

FWIW, the Foundation is a serious bass. Whether the provenance holds up or not, it certainly SOUNDS great on this track.

Really impressive work on the guitars and all on this one.

Very impressive. A full rock heavy sound. Kudos.

Much enjoyed. I always love it when people play some of their own stuff.

Hi, floyd jane.

Crunchy opening, telling me it won't be a typical fj song... as if such a thing exists.

Lots of interesting stuff going on, just like the subject of the song.

Cool harmonies! You're a man of many talents, and they all shine here. laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Much appreciated, Bob. I especially like "The band on this one is firing on all cylinders..."... since I'm the band smile
I used to think that I could not sing a rock song. Starting to feel that it's at least passable....

HOW THE HECK do I raise my voice in admiration of your unending breath of musical talent, Floyd. Seriously, not since Bela Fleck have I felt such admiration. Okay enough. What the... dang! Man, this is --to paraphrase the best-- Simply complicated. So much to listen to... 3rd time through so far, and I still pick up stunning pieces of this extraordinary whole. And I didn't even listen to the lyrics yet. BRB

4th time... Man, there are so many singers who make me not wanna, and many songwriters who make me want to hide what I make, and I'm a humble student of pretty much every mixing/master, but you are one of the very few (like McCartney) who are in all of those groups.

Interesting production choices.

The Ohio Express connection to the bass is interesting even if the provenience doesn't hold up. I like the Super Freak Rick James line...... The kinda girl you don't take home to momma.

It sounds like it wants to be a rocker. Nothing really out of the lines on this.....Nicely done.

BTW: the guitars sound pretty good too. Nice tone. GR7 sounds good.

This could be titled Floyd does Zappa.
I don't think any genre is out of your comfort zone!
I loved everything about this one!

Brilliant song from the start. The chorus itself reads like rock poetry.

Hi Floyd
Before I played the song I examined the lyrics and thought, hmmmm ....edgy, interesting, metaphorical, with a healthy dose of social commentary. I'm liking this so far.
That opening riff made me pay attention.(reminded me of the Kinks YRGM). As I listen I'm thinking that this song is fire, a genuine rocking tour de force of great vocals, instrumentation and mix and I am aware that I am privy to a Floyd master class.
There were small aspects of the song however that I wasn't keen on but they are solely a reflection of my individual preferences.
"Complicated" is an exhilarating blend of energy and musical passion which showcases your raw talent. Excellent !

One other thing that I forgot to mention about that bass... I've never changed the strings. After 30+ years, I'm still trying to decide when would be the best time to do that....

I've been waiting for a Floyd by Floyd song.
Your performances are excellent and the aggressive sound is fabulous too.
Good, good mix of a song that suits right now.
Cool narrative though I found myself questioning the take home to mamma line...wondering if it was necessary etc...just my brain doing its thing on side tracks.
REALLY great to hear YOU and a terrific song to do it with.

Cheers
