Has anyone that writes their own lyrics created a song with one of the AI platforms? I use Suno and have been creating a lot of my songs like this. I am thinking of using "Band in a Box", Upgrading to 2025 and figuring out the chord structures that the AI is creating and re-doing the backgrounds in "Band in a Box" Has anyone already done this? And will the overall product sound good enough to be commercial. I write all my own lyrics and I also write songs with my Guitar, Piano, and Keyboard Synthesizer, And my Drums. I just need to know if anyone has done this? and does the overall sound of what is produced in "Band in a Box", sound passable as to where I can put it up on streaming platforms and sell it on my website?

Trapper, I'm no expert on the first part of your question, but I'd invite you to listen to the BiaB user content on this sub forum for an idea of the quality. Good luck!

I checked it out. I've contacted my Music Attorney about this at "Delgado Entertainment". They have told me that once you re-create the music you have changed the structure and instruments of the song. So, therefore you can copyright it as your own. That song would not be a song without your lyrics. And you have changed it completely, so it is not considered a cover song, you own it. Since I am a paid member of Suno I have the right to do anything I want with the song, so therefor I can change it, and once it is changed it is an original copyrighted work. As, I copyright all of my song's, just to be on the safe side. I sing all of them myself. The thing is is you can not copyright AI generated music. After it has been changed with different instruments and other elements have been added to it, it makes it an original. And if you are a real human adding human elements to it like myself singing it, there is human interaction with the song. I play a lot of guitar and add other instruments with my Keyboard that makes human interaction. So it is no longer AI based in any of the song.

IANAL, but I'll give my two cents anyway. smile

Yes, you have the copyright to that particular performance, assuming the original music wasn't encumbered by copyright.

Keep in mind, no one can copyright a particular chord progression. So if someone were to copy the chord progression of your song using their own instruments, they would have the copyright to that performance of the song.

You don't have to be a paid member of Suno. After all, the music that is generated by Suno isn't copyrighted - even by the owners of Suno.

That said, the term "original copyrighted work" has a specific legal meaning. An "original work" is independently created by a human author. Independent creation means created yourself, without copying.

If all you've done is copied much of what a computer created, and only made minor changes, it's unlikely to legally be considered an "original work".

What you do own the is the copyright to the recording that you made. But the source material was copyright free, you don't own the copyright to the melody the Suno created. And if Suno created lyrics, you don't own a copyright to those, either.

To be clear, it's not just AI recording that can't be copyrighted. You also can't claim copyright to the melody or words, if they aren't your original words.

When AI generates the melody or lyrics, they cannot be copyrighted because they are created by a machine, and machines can't engage in contracts. That doesn't mean that the copyright automatically goes to you as a subscriber to Suno. Since no one holds the copyright, the melody and lyrics are in the public domain.

Similarly, if you made minor changes to something an AI created and claimed the result as your own original work, it would also not be the case. Making minor edits to a poem, for example, doesn't make you the author of the poem.

But it's virtually impossible for anyone to prove that an AI wrote the lyrics or melody, so you're likely to get away it.

Again, this makes it an original performance of the work, and you can own the copyright of an original performance, even if the work itself is in the public domain. And you own any original ideas that you've added to the material.

To me, this isn't so much an AI issue as a problem with automated copyright claims.

Certainly, being able to cheaply create an AI sound-alike song to base a claim on is problematic.

"... and does the overall sound of what is produced in "Band in a Box", sound passable as to where I can put it up on streaming platforms and sell it on my website?"

BiaB has given us the opportunity to license many of our songs and gather a respectable following on Spotify and other platforms. We've also been featured by several prominent playlist curators. Not being braggadocio ... just stating that from our perspective (and thousands of others) BiaB is an amazing product that has brought us a LOT of joy.

To me, this isn't so much an AI issue as a problem with automated copyright claims.

Automated claims can and should be fought every time. Most are from Brazilian and Russian bots, many generated by TuneCore.

I help many organizations fight these but, if they fight back, you need to consult an attorney.

That is very thoughtful of you. You can stream them from Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora and more. No need to pay for them. We are just doing it for fun. Our distributor does place them at iTunes but I’ve never looked for them there. Thank you for your interest.

When I get the chance I will purchase all of your songs. It may be over a little bit of time, but I can spend probably $20.00 a month till I get all your songs.

Now that's the way people should do it for, is just plain fun. That is great to see that it's not just money as a motivator.
