This is the third version of a song I first wrote in 2011.
Mike LeBlanc mentioned the name of a Hibiscus flower named "Confederate Rose" that changed colour from white to red as it faded and suggested it could make a song. I quickly looked it up and learned of the legend of it being used in the absence of field dressings in the American civil war.
Couldn't resist the challenge then and I've just given it more of a folk treatment than the last two versions .

Apologies for not listing the BIAB tracks. I changed them so often that
I lost track of which ones I muted and which I used.

Confederate Rose © 2011 Vic Arnold
V1
In a corner of this battlefield a pretty flower shines
My eyes are drawn from shot and shell that pounds our staggering lines
I see the rifle aimed at me between the blossoms fair
We fire together him and I and close our eyes in prayer
V2
The battle rages through the day. We cause the foe to run.
We catch our breath and walk around to see what we have done.
I come across the hedge of flowers splashed with crimson stain
The young boy's eyes are closed. He'll never open them again.
Ch.
Confederate rose changes her clothes
and turns from white to red.
She soaks up the blood that runs like a flood
Through this valley of the dead
V3
The autumn comes again
and to this valley, I
Now gold and yellow leaves have covered where that young man died
I place a white bloom on his grave and pay the tribute due
to my brother who was dressed in grey when I was dressed in blue
Ch.
Inst.
Br.
Mama died of broken heart but forgave me I suppose.
And Daddy still tends the garden and that old confederate rose.
Ch.
Confederate rose changes her clothes
and turns from white to red.
She soaks up the blood that runs like a flood
Through this valley of the dead

Vic, what a great song.
You picked the perfect backing tracks for you vocal.
Great vocal and mix.
"I place a white bloom on his grave and pay the tribute due
to my brother who was dressed in grey when I was dressed in blue "
That was a great story closing line.

Unclear if the pianist is a total beginner or a professional jazz player?

Vic, cool story, nicely told. Like the rhythmic flow of the vocals throughout and the little pause near the end. Never heard of a Confederate Rose until now. Somethin' new every day...

What a great source of inspiration for a song. Great job all the way around with this, Vic. Very moving.

Wow Vic. I read the lines before pushing play, and I loved it even without the music. A great story and a great way to tell it. The production is really good too, but without the words it's just pretty music. You've put the two together here and it has come out perfectly. Great song!

An excellent update, Vic.
These tracks are perfect for the lyric.
A strong production and a strong write.
And an oh-so-right vocal.

Many thanks Dave.
I love the story part of a song if not laid out too literally. The meaning has to be slightly below the surface.

Thanks Bob.
I liked the previous version too and was hesitant to alter it but then I thought, 'why not'.
It's interesting to try a variation even if it's not an improvement.

Vic,

Among your best. At first, after perusing the lyric and then hearing the opening, I wasn’t sure the music would match those powerful and sad lines . . . but it works really, really well. And your vocal is top notch here capturing the vibe and soulfulness of the tune. Excellent write! Excellent work!

Chiling song, Vic, and so well presented. A soldier's personal view of the tragedy. Brother vs. brother. You've created the prefect melody for the story, and sing it so well. I like the dynamic change when you mention the mom.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Vic...love this style of music...it reminds me of Ken Burns series "The Civil War"...what a tragic and awesome period in American history....in this song you remind us of the tragedy that took more American lives than all other wars combined...this is a tremendous song...great storytelling...super production...one of your best vocals IMHO...five stars from me!

We like this version ... not that we didn't enjoy the others.
We do think the more folk vibe works with the narrative.
We have done a lot of Civil War research in our area over the years so the well crafted narrative was right in our wheelhouse.

Very nice,

J&B
