I wish you were a Logic user. It has so many pianos it's overwhelming. Not that you as a player would necessarily like them but their Yamaha and Steinway variants sure sound good to my untrained ear ... as do the many vintage uprights. Seems like every time I look they've added more. All free.
I resisted buying any pianos this Black Friday, because I've decided to get the Pianoteq 8 Stage, which is the cheapest of the models. But since the Stage version didn't go on sale, I'll hold off on purchasing it and use my money on stuff that is on sale.
The hard part will be picking which models I want. I've heard very good things about the Kawai and Bösendorfer that were recently released.
One of the nice things about the Pianoteq pianos is that each comes with a number of different presets, such as Classical, New Age, and Felt. There's also an an option to "age" the piano.
Plus, because it's physically modeled, it's a small download and loads fast. You can download a free demo and decide for yourself if you like it.

Best I know everything Modart was on sale over the past week end - 20% off. I already have Stage so I just picked up the Kawi for 20% off. You missed it by just a few days.

I have the demo version. It is THE best Playing software. Sounds great and just "plays great" through my computer/studio set up. But when I want to really Play, I go to my Yamaha P-525. It is heaven to play. Especially with a good pair of headphones. When I tried it in was mix (the Pianoteq) - of a piano/vocal production - I thought it sounded wonky in a few places (the piece does not use any of the missing keys).
So I'd be interested in anyone's experience with it in a production - sparse and/or not (I thought it would be the one). Dan?
FJ, for me Pianoteq is the currently the ONE and has been for the past year of more. I like a bright piano in Pianoteq so I gravatate to the Steinway D and the big classical pianos and then use one of the many defaults each piano has to get different flavors.
Last month when I was considering the New Shigeru Kawai SK (a 10 foot grand) I asked a friend to come by and play it for me on my system. I recorded this below. I am afraid you are going to have to trust me a bit here, while I listened during this video recording it was incredable! But when i play back now, between the video recording and the compression of YouTube I am afraid they has stolen the soul of the artist. But you will get the idea.
I follow discussion in the VI Control forum which includes "all things Piano VST". There is a camp which says the Pianoteq can have " I will use your word, wonky sound". But that comes general from the purists who only want to hear 20 or more audio layers recorded in the Cistein Chapal. And I love those big libaries also. But I don't need those big libraries. So I am pretty happy with Pianoteq.
